Color Picker & Converter

Pick a colour or type it as HEX, RGB or HSL and convert it to every other format.

How to Use Color Picker & Converter

  1. Click the colour box to pick a colour, or type into the HEX, RGB or HSL field.
  2. The other formats update as soon as what you've typed is a valid colour.
  3. Click the copy icon next to the format you need.
  4. Click any swatch in Tints & Shades to make it the current colour.

Formats it understands

HEX accepts #2563eb, 2563eb or the short form #abc. RGB accepts rgb(37, 99, 235), the newer space-separated rgb(37 99 235) or just 37, 99, 235. HSL accepts hsl(221, 83%, 53%) or hsl(221deg 83% 53%). Alpha values are ignored. While you type, the box shows a red border until the value is complete and valid.

HSL is rounded to whole numbers, so converting HSL to HEX and back can shift a channel by a point or two. That difference isn't visible on screen.

About the CMYK value

CMYK is worked out with the standard simple formula, without a printer's colour profile. It's a good starting point, but print shops convert using profiles for their paper and press, so ask them for the exact values if colour matching matters. For converting a CMYK value from a print file to screen colours, use the CMYK to RGB Converter; to grab a colour from a photo or screenshot, use the Image Color Picker.

Key Features & Practical Use Cases

  • Turning a brand HEX code into RGB or HSL for CSS, or the other way round.
  • Finding lighter and darker versions of a colour for hover states and borders.
  • Getting a rough CMYK value to hand to a printer.
  • Checking what an HSL value from a design file looks like.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert HEX to RGB?

Type or paste the HEX code into the HEX field. The RGB value appears below it, ready to copy.

Can I convert RGB to HEX too?

Yes. Type the RGB value into the RGB field and the HEX field updates.

What are tints and shades?

Tints are lighter versions of the colour and shades are darker ones. Here they keep the same hue and saturation and change only the lightness.

Is the CMYK conversion exact?

No. It's a profile-free estimate. Printers using colour profiles may give slightly different numbers.
